How do babies predict sounds?

Age Range: 4 - 5 months

In this 20-minute study over Zoom, we’re interested in how the infant brain processes auditory and visual stimuli. Your child will watch animated videos of spheres that bounce around the screen while we record their looking time to track eye movement and fixation patterns toward visual stimuli.

Age Range: 8 - 9 months

In a 15-minute study over Zoom, your baby will watch two groups of characters. One character will help both a member of their own group and a member of the other group. We will use gaze tracking to ask: Do babies expect individuals to be more likely to help members of their same group?

Age Range: 9-12 months

In this 15-minute study over Zoom, your baby will see a series of fun, colorful toys. An actor will also be on screen. Sometimes the actor will point to the toy, suggesting they are "sharing attention" to the toy with your baby. Other times, the actor will just place their hand on the table. We will use gaze tracking to measure how well babies learn to recognize the toys. This study will help us understand how gestures can support babies' learning.

Age Range: 9-12 months

In this 15-minute study over Zoom, your baby will see a series of fun, colorful toys. An actor will also be on screen. Sometimes the actor will look at the camera and then back at the toy, suggesting they are "sharing attention" to the toy with your baby. Other times, the actor will just look at the toys. We will use gaze tracking to measure how well babies learn to recognize the toys. This study will help us understand how caregivers can support or distract from babies' learning.

This study requires that your infant has an older sibling with an autism diagnosis (proof will be requested)

Age Range: 10-11 months

In this 15-minute study over Zoom, babies watch a short play about some friends. We use gaze tracking to ask: Do babies expect someone to be happy when something good happens to their friend, and sad when something bad happens to the same friend? This study will help us understand how babies use social relationships to guide their understanding of emotions.

Age Range: 14-15 months
In a 15-minute study over Zoom, your baby will watch a video with three characters. One character will struggle to climb up a hill. One of the others will help the climber up the hill, while the other will "hinder" the climber by blocking their path to the top. We will use gaze tracking to ask: Do babies expect the helper to keep helping in a new context? This study will help us understand how babies learn who is likely to help.

Studies for ages 2 - 5 years

What? Why? How?

Age Range: 2 - 12 years

In our 20-minute Zoom experiment, your child will play open-ended games where they describe a picture or make a guess about why something happened. We're studying how children incorporate context into their everyday reasoning, and how this changes over development. This study is conducted jointly at UCSD and Stanford University.

Learning From Stories about Others

Age Range: 5 - 12 years

A 30-minute online interview over Zoom where children (ages 5-12 years) will be read some stories and asked questions about the story characters.

Studies for ages 4 - 6 years

Studies for Autistic kids & siblings ages 0 - 5 years

NIRS-SoCal

Age Range: 9 to 12 months

In a 15-minute study over Zoom, your baby will watch some videos of 1-2 people looking at an object. Do babies recognize the object they saw in 1st and 3rd party interactions?

Infant-Caregiver Interactions

Age Range: 3-12 months

This study is observing infants’ behaviors when interacting with their caregivers. Particularly, we are interested in how infants at risk for developing Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD), interact and socialize in early stages of development. If you participate in this study, you will be invited to a recorded Zoom session where you and your baby will play with toys in the comfort of your own home! You will receive a $10 Amazon gift card for participating!
